Portuguese

Portuguese is a Romance language derived from Latin and is part of the Indo-European Language group. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese was spread far and wide as Portugal established a colonial and commercial empire, which has continued almost up until today. As a result, Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe Guinea-Bissau, East Timor and Macau. It is estimated that between 215 and 220 million people speak Portuguese, with the earliest records of a distinctly Portuguese language appearing in administrative documents dating from the 9th century AD. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal.

Portugal is a member of the European Union and the United Nations as well as a founding member of the OECD and NATO. Major industries in Portugal include oil refineries, automotive, cement production, pulp and paper, textiles, footwear, furniture, and cork with Portugal being the world’s leading producer. Portugal is also the world’s fifth largest producer of tungsten, and the world’s eleventh largest producer of wine.

Well known Portuguese companies or brands include Sandemans port, Mateus rosé wine, Madeira wine, Ferreira Porto and TAP Portugal. Famous Portuguese include Cristiano Ronaldo, Vasco da Gama, Luis Figo, Nelly Furtado, Baruch Spinoza and José Saramago.

    I recently presented Tectrans with a difficult challenge to translate a number of technical brochures from English to Italian with a very tight deadline for completion. Our new Italian distributor had a last minute opportunity to present our products at a trade show which was an opportunity I certainly did not want to miss.
